About Chester Races Chester Racecourse is the oldest racecourse in England, with racing around the famous ‘Roodee’ track dating back to 1539. The venue's distinctive features, including the city walls and the banks of the River Dee, have remained largely unchanged, contributing to its unique atmosphere. The tight, sharp nature of the course means that it exclusively hosts Flat racing, and Chester’s May Festival is one of the highlights of the Flat racing season. The historic Chester Cup, a two-and-a-quarter-mile handicap, is the highlight of the three-day Festival. Other notable races include the Chester Vase, Dee Stakes, and Cheshire Oaks, along with prestigious events like the Huxley Stakes and Ormonde Stakes for older horses.
